Puerto Rican Mashed Yautía
A simple and comforting Puerto Rican side dish made with tender boiled yautía, butter, and milk. Lightly seasoned with salt, pepper, oregano, and optional dried cilantro, this creamy yautía pairs beautifully with chicken, pork, seafood, or your favorite Puerto Rican meal.
My mom used to make yautía for me, and I loved it. There was something so comforting about sitting down to a simple plate of warm yautía. In Puerto Rico, yautía is often simply boiled and served with a drizzle of olive oil, allowing the natural flavor of the root to shine.
In my home, we also enjoyed it majada—mashed until creamy with a little milk and butter. This is my version of that childhood favorite.
Sometimes the simplest foods carry the biggest memories. For me, yautía majada isn’t just a side dish; it’s a little taste of my mamá and my childhood.
Why I Love Yautía
Yautía, also known as malanga, is a starchy tropical root vegetable that has been enjoyed throughout the Caribbean and Latin America for generations.

It provides:
- Carbohydrates for energy
- Dietary fiber, which supports digestive health
- Potassium, an important mineral for normal muscle and nerve function
- Vitamin C, which contributes to normal immune function
- Naturally occurring nutrients while being a simple, minimally processed whole-food ingredient
Because yautía is naturally starchy and filling, it makes a comforting alternative to potatoes and works beautifully as a side dish.
Traditional Puerto Rican Options
Simple & Traditional:
Boil the yautía until tender, drain, and serve warm with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and a little salt.
Yautía Majada — Chef Lygdda’s Way:
Mash the cooked yautía with milk and butter, then season with salt, pepper, oregano, and optional dried cilantro.
Chef Lygdda’s Note:
Food doesn’t always have to be complicated to be special. Sometimes it’s the food our mothers made for us as children that stays with us forever.
Ingredients
- 2 medium yautías, peeled and cut into small pieces
- ½ cup milk, plus more as needed
- 1 tablespoon butter, plus more as needed
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Dried oregano, a little, to taste
- Dried cilantro, optional
Instructions
1. Prepare the yautía
Peel the yautías and cut them into small pieces. Rinse well.
2. Boil
Place the yautía in a pot and cover with water. Add a little salt and boil until the yautía is very tender and easily pierced with a fork.
3. Drain and mash
Drain the yautía completely. While it is still hot, mash it until you reach your desired texture.
4. Add the milk and butter
Add 1 tablespoon of butter and ½ cup of warm milk. Stir and mash until creamy. Add a little more milk or butter if needed to reach the consistency you prefer.
5. Season
Season with salt, black pepper, and a little dried oregano. Add dried cilantro if desired. Mix well and taste, adjusting the seasoning as needed.
6. Serve
Serve warm as a side dish with grilled chicken, pork, seafood, or any meal where you want a delicious Puerto Rican touch.
Chef Lygdda’s Tips
- Add the milk slowly. Yautía can vary in texture, so you may need more or less milk.
- Mash while hot for the smoothest and creamiest result.
- Drain very well before adding the milk and butter.
- Taste before serving and adjust the salt, pepper, butter, and milk to your liking.
- For a more rustic texture, leave a few small pieces of yautía instead of mashing it completely smooth.
